Les Schtroumpfs: Le Teleportaschtroumpf on CD-i

>> Saturday, May 31, 2008

For a long time I've never seen a member here who has a copy of the official Smurfs game on CD-i. For a long time we even thought it was only a prototype CD-i (we only have a french and dutch prototype). Out of the blue a french version appeared on eBay a few years ago, which gave me the possibility to snap some nice pictures. But it showed the french version was actually released in 1998. However, the dutch version remains to be prototype exclusive, as far as we know. And what's even better, it's a very nice game, it's a mix of platforming and minigames. But you have to understand the dutch or french language to understand. (So Devin doesn't get the point Laughing ). Shroo-man recently got his hands on a copy: "the release date on mine says 1995 not 1998. How strange are those product numbers: "SCHTRFR4021", "SCHTRFR4041" and "SCHTRFR4011"! a different one for each of the manual, disc and back cover. I played it, it's very nice. if you choose the plaform mode I think up to 4 different people can play but not at the same time. you have to choose minigames and the first player to finish 10 wins. I haven't completed it yet though some mini games need an understanding of French.

Screenshots to follow! Thanks to Shroo-man for the pictures!

We count a total of 133 released CD-i games

One of the members of our ever-small CD-i community puts the deed to the word after all the endless struggles in creating a complete CD-i title library. One of the biggest efforts before has to be Philipscdi.com, which has in my opinion the best collection of all catagories, as it is difficult to get one for reference, kids, etc. Interactive Dreams published a full list of movies published by Philips, and Shroo-man made one about games. Shroo-man: "I'm not sure how complete and accurate it is. Of course there is also the recently "released" games : Frog Feast, Go, Jack Sprite vs the Crimson Ghost, Plunderball and Space Ranger." They are not included. So to anyone: Which game do you miss?

Mysterious CD-i audio format: How to rip it?

It seems like nobody knows about how to rip the music of CD-i discs, there has also been no answer on a forum post about the specifications of CD-i audio music as well. It looks like more people are interested in it (I'd love to hear the Litil Divil soundtrack again), but the knowledge isn't there. CD-i Fan responds: "here is currently no single tool to do this. It is possible to extract the music files from the CD using e.g. IsoBuster, but they need some massaging (selecting the right channel and/or stripping headers) before the data is in "pure" ADPCM format. The "pure" ADPCM format is identical to the one used with CD-ROM XA and there are some tools out there to decode it; I think ffmpeg is one of them. This assumes that the music is stored on the disc in "native" CD-i format; if not actual runtime grabbing (using either a CD-i emulator or a hardware player) is the only way. Many titles store the sound effects in encoded form, for example. A future project of mine is to create a standalone "CD-i File Player" that would provide most of the above with a graphical interface like IsoBuster; most of the support code is already in CD-i Emulator..."
What I always did is using my Minidisc recorder to record the audio (analog). It works perfect, although I remember playing Litil Divil I had to watch out little Mutt didn't fall asleep because he'd start snoring and disturbing the background music

Holland never sold non-Philips CD-i players

>> Sunday, May 25, 2008

I hate it when I see beautiful pictures of the LG GDI700 CD-i player below and I ask myself why they never released it it the Netherlands. The Netherlands had, of all countries, the most popular and biggest CD-i fan-base! Maybe I never paid enough attention to it, but I'm pretty sure I've never seen a non-Philips branded CD-i player here. Was it because Philips didn't allow for it, or was it because LG thought the dutch market was too small to invest in. To tease us 'dutchies' even more, look at the beautiful pictures below of a brand-new LG GDI 700 cd-i player and also a mint box of the Goldstar CD-i version of the Philips 450 CD-i player. I think honestly this LG player (or the DVS equivalent) is the most beautiful model ever released, and, also important, it offers a replaceable timekeeper battery which means it doesn't die like our Philips consumer models will!

These pictures are courtesy of Lemmi; this is his personal collection. Boy, am I jealous ;)

Le Monde Team does not feel any rush to reload the site

There is some progress to mention here, as DJKoelkast deleted the old site permanently and started to reload the contents. It's not completed yet, but at least he has been busy with it. Although it's worth mentioning the Le Monde site will not be the same, as Omegalfa announced that he won't be the administrator of the site anymore. This means it remains unsure who will lead the website, and chances are it will be back there only for archive purposes. As we all know, Omegalfa was mainly the only person who put up some activity at Le Monde, so I'm afraid it will never be the same again. Same thing goes for CD-i Collective, as Gir does not have the ambition to create a new CD-i Collective. For us at Interactive Dreams this means we will continue to save and secure the contents for this site.

CD-i regional exclusive releases

>> Monday, May 12, 2008

Many interesting releases on CD-i were only published in a specific region. Especially the home country of CD-i, The Netherlands, had quite a few unique games developed by first class CD-i developers. Have you ever played Lingo? It's a dutch word game developed by SPC Vision, the same team who was behind The Apprentice. Technically Lingo is very nice and there are more titles like this. Shroo-man, one of our members at the CD-i community, put together a list of all regional releases on CD-i. Very few people know about the german version of the medical encyclopedia: Kursbuch Gesundheit is a very impressive encyclopedia about the human body, including lots of digital video. Produced by Verlag Kiepenheuer & Witsch in 1995, I'm surprised Philips didn't go for a cheap translation of the dutch medical encylopedia (from SPC Vision), but instead they funded a completely new project. The same goes for the many regional but fully-functional encylopedias in holland (Standaard Encylopedie), USA (Compton's Encyclopedia), Germany (Bertelsmann Universal Lexikon) and France (Dictionnaire Hachette Multimédi). Personally I find those titles to be very impressive on CD-i. Bonus points if you have collected them all!

Do you remember the '60s on CD-i ?

>> Friday, May 2, 2008

Created by the same team who developed Cluedo on CD-i, I just saw this title popping up on eBay. Released in 1996, 3T Productions announced this title in the press in a 1992 paper, so it's another long project with perhaps an interesting story, just as we like here at Interactive Dreams. Normally I don't really enjoy these 'trivia' titles on CD-i, while there are a lot of them in all kind of themes, like the NFL trivia quiz, the Wimbledon CD-i Quiz, the 'All the news and views' series on CD-i, ... and more. And what makes this one special? It uses Digital Video to show lots of videos about the sixties. Unfortunately you don't see it very often; Like more of these trivia games; it's hard to find some info or pictures. I saw this post in our archive vault from 2006, so I've never found a copy since. Maybe you have?
